Cripple Creek Grade Exploration

The start of the grade just off the Cripple Creek trail Grade - lots of rock fall but still very wide and discernable Grade - lots of rock and log fall but still very wide and discernable This is where it crossed an un-named creek and the grade got VERY wide - like a road Old collapsed bridge over the un-named creek Closeup of the bridge - you can see the spikes they used This is the un-named creek - it does not appear on maps The grade continues past the creek crossing - VERY wide We found some bones along the grade - probably a deer or elk More bones along the grade This was at a point nearing where it hit Three Lynx creek. The grade got considerably narrower, more like trail Tall waterfall below the grade This was the spot approaching Three Lynx creek Three Lynx creek above the waterfall Smaller waterfall (15'?) above where the grade appears to terminate Smaller waterfall (15'?) above where the grade appears to terminate This is where the grade appears to have terminated - there was a LOT of downed logs in this area of the creek This is the spot where the wide road terminated and turned into a trail going uphill until it met another grade segment a couple hundred feet up. This is a flat area below the grade we explored - we looked for a trail down to Three Lynx but really didn't find much of substance This was a smaller waterfall/cascade as we headed up to the larger waterfall up Three Lynx Creek The large waterfall up Three Lynx Creek The large waterfall up Three Lynx Creek This is Three Lynx creek below the large waterfall - you can see the waterfall in the upper left thru the trees. This is the grade on the south side of where it crossed the Cripple Creek trail This is where the grade crossed another un-named creek and had a bridge over it. The grade south of the Cripple Creek trail was in considerably worse shape - LOTS of downed trees to climb over/under This is the point where the grade crossed Cripple Creek - we turned around at this point This is the point where the grade crossed Cripple Creek - we turned around at this point This is the point where the grade crossed Cripple Creek - we turned around at this point - you can see Cripple Creek thru the trees This is the point where the grade crossed Cripple Creek - we turned around at this point - you can see Cripple Creek thru the trees This is a snippet from the 1916 Map showing the location of the grade/trail This is a snippet from the 1916 Oregon National Forest map with an interesting notation - Ditch along this path
